About Burtons Academy

Burtons Veterinary Equipment now has a Clinical Team to complement its extensive anaesthesia product range.

The Clinical Team is developing and designing, engaging, innovative CPD on various topics of anaesthesia, focusing particularly on patient monitoring and mechanical ventilation in exotic, small animal and large animal species.

Core values

In veterinary education, applying theory-based learning to an authentic clinical environment can be challenging, which is why we are combining the two.

We believe in the need for high-quality, hands-on practical CPD that is ready to be applied immediately in clinical practice – imagine solidifying your theory learning on positive pressure ventilation by having the opportunity to apply it minutes later to a real-life, carbon dioxide-expiring canine model!

An Evening Class on Capnography & Ventilation

In this CPD evening we will discuss both capnography and ventilation, before breaking off into small group practical sessions, working hands-on with a ventilator and a carbon dioxide-expiring canine model. This will enable the real-life simulation of a patient under anaesthesia and will focus on using capnography as a tool during mechanical ventilation. Whilst we practice using a mechanical ventilator, all the concepts apply to you if you are providing manual breaths too

A Hands-on Approach to Ventilation

Findings from our large-scale survey that included veterinary surgeons, registered veterinary nurses and students highlighted that 70% of those in practice are not confident with ventilation, despite 27% of those surveyed having a ventilator and not using it.

This full-day course will include capnography, dead space, breathing systems and how to ventilate a patient under anaesthesia. Followed by an afternoon of small group practical sessions, working hands-on with a ventilator and a carbon dioxide-expiring canine model, enabling the real-life simulation of a patient under anaesthesia.

Keith Simpson

BVSc MRCVS MIET - Clinical Director

Keith qualified from Bristol University Vet School in 1986 and spent 15 years in a combination of mixed and small animal practice in the Southwest. Returning to College to study an HNC in Electronics, Keith gained entry to the Institute of Incorporated Engineers in 1994 before going on to study for a Master’s in Electronics in 1997 at the University of Exeter.

Thus, having strong footholds in two disciplines that together formed the foundation of the well-known Vetronic Services, now Vetronic by Burtons. Since then, Keith has designed and manufactured over 50 unique products for the veterinary market, with a passion for ventilation and its monitoring. Keith has also produced many articles and given numerous talks over the years on all aspects of ventilation and monitoring.

Keith’s knowledge base includes the following areas:

Ventilators & Ventilation: Classification, types and modes, ventilation theory, underlying physics and physiology and clinical application.
Monitoring: Multi-parameter physics, physiology and design.Concepts and theory of capnography, pulse-oximetry, blood pressure monitoring, ECG, temperature and breath analysis. Application in aclinical setting and interpretation of the preceding, based on core concepts.

Karen Heskin

BVSc CertSAO MSc(VAA) MRCVS - Clinical Specialist (Anaesthesia)

After qualifying from the University of Liverpool, Karen began her veterinary journey as a small animal GP. Earning her RCVS Certificate in Small Animal Orthopaedics led to over a decade in both human orthopaedic research and veterinary referrals. Transitioning to a Veterinary Technical Manager role, she shifted her focus to anaesthesia, ultimately earning an MSc in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia.

Karen is excited to collaborate with Keith Simpson (Clinical Director) to further develop Burtons Academy, bringing fresh innovations and sharing evidence-based anaesthesia knowledge with the veterinary community.

A quote from Karen after joining Burtons Academy:

“Burtons is a well-respected family owned and run company with firm foundations in innovation and scientific breakthrough.
